Gardening

Rob and I worked our asses off all weekend getting the vegetable garden ready. It has four tiers to it as it’s on a slope. What a lot of work! Rob rototilled and I weeded and planted. So far we have snap peas, snow peas, potatoes, artichokes, blueberries, raspberries and boysenberries. Much more to come as the weather warms up. Right now it’s cold and WINDY! I hate the wind, it makes the horses super squirrly.

Very Sad News

My sister in law lost her mother to breast cancer last November. She has been crushed by it and has been having a very hard time coping with her sorrow. They were very, very close. Last Friday her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer… and this morning he passed away. It was so quick and so unexpected. I just feel so terrible for her. To lose both your parents in such a close time frame is just a tragedy. I don’t even have the words to say how badly I feel for her and my brother. At least neither of them is in any pain and they are together again. Sad, sad, sad.

A Lucky Little Bird

I found the strangest thing when I walked out of the bedroom yesterday morning. Betsy was stock still starring down at something, Purrl was laying on the ground like a fluffy sphinx, and Oyster was curled up in a chair. They were all staring at a little bird sitting on the floor! I went over and saw that it’s head was all red – oh no blood! But fortunately I was wrong – it was a red headed finch who obviously had been licked by… someone as there were a few feathers around and it’s little head was wet! I scooped it up and placed it outside on the roof right outside the door. I kind of wobbled around a bit and then flew off into a nearby tree. Thank God I came out when  I did or that little bird would just be a pile of feathers. Oyster and Purrl are great hunters – not sure about Betsy but I am guessing she was the licker;) We think the bird came doen through the chimney and out the wood stove. Time to check the sceens up there me thinks!

Thank Goodness it Was Just Garbage Gut

Elkie – one of the dogs, had a nasty episode a couple of days ago with puking bloody vomit and nasty bloody diarrhea. We thought that this must be her checkout time and on the way to the emergency vet clinic we agreed no drastic measures. It was very stressful. The good news though is that the tests ruled out rat poison, and all the other nasty things it could have been, cancer, tumors etc. So we narrowed it down to her eating a really nasty piece of carcass that she must have found on the ranch. $450 later – she is fine as the day. I’m very relieved, but also a bit miffed that she would be SO STUPID as to EAT A DEAD ROTTEN THING! And cost me $450 on top of it. Pets, aghhhh!
