Got and Handshake and a Hug!

Got my books signed – thanks Dave! Can’t wait to give Sweetsmoke to Shawn – she will love it.

Sweetsmoke and David Fuller

I got an email yesterday from David Fuller the author of one of the best books (Sweetsmoke) I have ever read. He said he was going to be in Petaluma and at the Sant Rosa Copperfields tomorrow afternoon. But I don’t know what time. So being the super sleuth (ha;) that I am I called Copperfields up to see what time they might be expecting him. They didn’t know about it! Yikes. Hopefully I helped out though as I was able to give the Events Coordinator his email address and maybe things will get scheduled correctly now. I’d really like to meet him and thank him for such a great story. That book was the BEST.

Looking forward to Chickfest this Thursday, Friday and Saturday! Time to unwind in Bodega Bay with the chicklets and just have some fun. We always try to stay in the same place, Cliff Cottage. We love that place. We do exciting things like walk on the beach, knit, drink, eat, drink, knit etc. Very screaming wild;) Unfortunately I burned my hand rather badly last night – DUMB! – so will have to see if I’m up for much knitting.

And of course to shake David Fullers hand if possible!

Big Night at Bovolo

We were lucky enough to be invited by our great friends Cathy and Larry to the Big Night at Bovolo the other night. What a treat! Margarita pizza and homemade salami, fingerling potaoes and prime rib, champagne, great wines and great conversation. Bovolo is located inside Copperfields Bookstore in Healdsburg. Bovolo is part of the slow food movement which emphasizes using local produce and the concept of eco-gastronomy. I just love it. Here we were at long tables winding through a most wonderful bookstore seated next to new people who love to eat as much as we do. It was a blast, my three favorite things, good friends, good food and good BOOKS!

I have kind of a funny story that connects to the restaurant. Last winter Jaffray and I were driving down the road that leads to our house and we came upon a very nice woman who had a flat tireĀ  – in the POURING rain. We gave her a ride to Windsor to meet her daughter who would help her out- said daughter is Duskie Estes one of the owners of Bovolo. When Jaff and I were returning from doing our errands there was the tow truck fixing the flat – AND jumping Duskies car battery as now they were BOTH broken down. Oh brother;) So I got to see Carole (the mom) again and officially meet Duskie. It made me feel really good that we were able to help someone out when they needed it. And they survived;)

‘Sweetsmoke’ by David Fuller

OK I am totally recommending this book – ‘Sweetsmoke‘ by David Fuller. It is being released today August 27th. I am almost through with it but had to turn out the light at midnight last night. I do need SOME sleep;) Check out their website. There is even a map of the plantation where the story takes place – I printed it out and am keeping it in the book. I can’t say enough good things about this incredible novel

Here is my review for Librarything.com – remember – I AM NOT A WRITER – just an appreciative reader of those who can. And no one paid me for this believe me. If I like something you’ll know, if I hate it you’ll know even sooner and louder.

“This is an exceptional novel . Can I give more than five stars? Can I give ten? May I please offer twenty! This book has held me for the last several days in suspense, fear, anger, humor and yes despite the subject, joy. I LOVE THIS BOOK and I do not say this lightly. I am not going to go in to the story synopsis, others will have done this far better than I. Suffice it to say that through David Fullers expert writing I lived with the characters, cried with them and suffered with them. This is how good a story teller he is. I laughed – albeit a little bit at the cluelessness of (frightened) slave owners, as they were trapped in the dysfunctional world of their own making. But what a novel, what a story to tell. Cassius our hero, is a wonder, a very angry man who has the strength and personal will to talk himself out of throttling everyone who ‘gets his goat’ even though most justly deserve it . He is good/bad, smart/simple, angry… vindictive …and finally – forgiving. Cassius reaches a place most of us never will, despite being a slave all his life. What an incredible character, and what a great telling of a difficult and terrible part of our nations history. Most highly, HIGHLY recommended.

Thank you LibraryThing for the opportunity to view this first hand. I just adored it. Best time I’ve spent behind a page in a long time. ( )”

Motivation Needed…

Not very motivated here at work today. I am just so tired from all the activities, can’t seem to regroup. I am going to try not to do anything on Sunday and just read my book. I snagged an early reviewer book from LibraryThing.com which I am loving called ‘Sweetsmoke’ by David Fuller. It’s about slavery in the south during the civil war. Very haunting and sad, but excellent. I think I’m just suffering a little burn out. Need a vacation of some sort. Rob and I are planning a weekend trip to Mendocino sometime soon as my Mom gave me a gift certificate to Little River Inn LAST YEAR for my birthday – pathetic that we haven’t been able to use it yet. But we’ve been actually talking about it so it might actually happen! Really could use it right now…

My Addiction;)

I have an addiction, fortunately it’s a somewhat healthy one;) I am addicted to LibraryThing.com. I adore it, I could surf through that site all day checking on what others are reading and recommending. Just love it. I check it often to see if someone has left me a comment. I was even able to meet one of the authors of an Early Reviewer book I was lucky enough to snag (win). “The Wednesday Sisters” by Meg Waite Clayton. She is a lovely person and a WONDERFUL writer! Love it, love it, love it.
